The 2018 Tertiary Education Management Conference (TEMC) in Perth was an excellent conference for professional staff working in the Higher Education sector.

Everyone attending wanted to share ideas, network with their colleagues and gather new ideas for making changes in their areas. There was a huge range of keynotes and presentations and workshops to attend presenting examples of innovation and service improvement around student administration, student services, facilities management and campus services

The conference, which was set against the backdrop of the Perth Casino, included Welcome Drinks at the Freemantle Maritime Museum and a fantastic pirate themed Conference Dinner and dance show that ended the four-day long event. Everyone witnessed the amazing and impromptu dance routine of Bill McKendry and Gerard Goodwin-Moore from ACU. Attendees had the opportunity to visit the local Perth universities on the final day.

Over 1,000 attendees shared, compared and discussed issues affecting them and their Higher Education colleagues in Australia at the conference, providing many opportunities to gain new knowledge and insights into

I was pleased to present our two-hour ‘Navigating the 8 Wastes in Higher Education Workshop’ with attendees sharing how complex and complicated many processes and activities have become. By the end of the workshop, however, attendees enthusiastically mentioned how the workshop provided them with options and ideas to create change in their area the very next day. This is great to hear and is the reason that DVE works on projects in this sector – to make change happen and help people implement new ways of working.

Winners of 7th Annual ATEM/Campus Morning Mail Best Practice Awards in Tertiary Education Management were also announced over a gala dinner at the conference with Helen Ryan, former Faculty Manager of the Federation Business School, Federation University announced as the winner of the DVE Business Solutions Award for Excellence in School and Faculty Management.

This award recognises excellence in management at the School, Faculty or College level and outstanding contributions in best practice at the operational or strategic level – so a hearty congratulations go to Helen!
